South Dakota governor Kristi Noem has evidently learned her lesson on women’s sports. In the wake of the Ivy League male swimmer controversy, Noem has announced new legislation that would preserve sex-based — and hence female-only — sports. My colleague, Caroline Downey, reports:

The governor is likely initiating the legislation to prove the state’s commitment to preserving integrity in women’s sports after she rejected a similar bill months ago that would bar biological boys from competing on girls’ sports teams. Noem received widespread backlash for that move, which many conservatives perceived as a capitulation to special corporate interests.

As National Review editorialized at the time “either boys should be allowed in girls’ sports, or they should not.” It’s heartening to see Noem step up. Better late than never!
